AVI's work is really impressive. It locates families in rural villages in India who fall below the poverty line:-

Those unable to feed themselves throughout the year
Those that cannot provide education for at least one child in the family
Those that cannot pay for health care at any time in the year.

AVI runs many different programmes. One such programme is its Income Generation Programme which Provides loans to women to start up small businesses such as selling vegetable, sewing clothes, breeding goats etc. A loan of Rs 3,000 (£40) can provide an income of Rs. 1,000 per month. There are now 1100 such groups with almost 20,000 members making a real difference not ony to the status of women in the areas, but also to the income of families and to the way in which money is spent. More is set aside for a rainy day, for eduaction and for health.
