Harkirat Singh Rayatt

Blessed with a clean playing style and a talent for teaching, Harkirat Singh learnt classical tabla under the tutelage of Gurmit Singh Virdee - protege of Ustad Bahadur Singh and Pandit Samta Prasad. In the seventies and eighties when the classical tabla scene was in its fledgling state, he performed several tabla duets with his ustad across various venues in London. From 1976 to 1981, he helped organize the first series of tabla solos in London. This later led to involvement in TAAL, the North Indian Percussion Society set up by his Ustad, and Chakardar – an organization currently spearheading the promotion of tabla in the UK. He has been involved in and organized almost all the major tabla concerts by leading international tabla artists in the UK. Chakardar is proof of Harkirat's efforts and artistic talent. He has links with all the great tabla maestros and is committed to bringing students in touch with these great artists. He himself has been teaching tabla for the past 25 years and has produced some of UK’s top youth tabla players. Many of his students have won awards and the Chakardar performing group showcasing his students has performed at all the prestigious venues in London including the Royal Albert Hall. He has performed widely and accompanied renowned artists such as Ustad Amanat Ali and Ustad Fateh Ali khan, Smt. Pragya Banerjee, Smt. Pratushya Chaudhuri, Smt. Nanda Banerjee, Dharambir Singh, Kiranpal Singh, Himadri Bagchi and Ken Zuckerman.
