What happens at the Tabla Retreat?
Since 2003, Chakardar has been holding annual Tabla Summer Schools with some of the most respected and learned teachers from India. You will engage in a variety of activities that altogether engage with the theoretical and practical aspects of tabla playing, be it the tala and rhythm class, one-to-one teaching, group performance planning or evening events such as performance showcases, teacher interviews or media demonstrations.
Spend 4 dedicated days focused on your tabla skills and soaking up inspiration! Learn from experienced teachers and performers including the great tabla maestro Pandit Nayan Ghosh, Prabhu Edouard, Ustad Harkirat Rayatt, Gurdain Rayatt and Harkiret Bahra.
We are very fortunate to have one of the foremost female sitar players in India, Anupama Bhagwat, at this year’s retreat to teach throughout the 4 days. Sitar students are welcome to join!

Born in 1956, Pandit Nayan Ghosh is an acclaimed worldwide maestro with great superlative command on both the Tabla and the Sitar. Having received intensive and extensive training in tabla, sitar and vocal from his illustrious father, the renowned tabla maestro and guru, Padmabhushan Pt. Nikhil Ghosh, Nayan Ghosh has innate artistry and emotive musical depth in his performances. He also received invaluable guidance from his father’s Guru, the great Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa
Regarded as one of the most versatile tabla players of his generation, he is a worthy disciple of renowned tabla maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh. Ustad Harkirat Rayatt is a disciple of the late Bhai Gurmit Virdee, himself a disciple of Ustad Bahadur Singh (Punjab Gharana) & Pdt Samta Prasad (Benares Gharana). He has performed widely, accompanying renowned artists such as Ustad Amanat Ali & Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Smt. Pragya Banerjee, Smt. Pratushya Chaudhuri, Smt. Nanda Banerjee, Dharambir Singh, Kiranpal Singh, Himadri Bagchi and Ken Zuckerman to name a few
Anupama Bhagwat, sitar musician nonpareil, has carved a niche in Indian Classical Music with a versatile & eclectic style. Acclaimed world-wide with a repertoire of global performances since 1995, her sensitivity and erudition has taken her to the highest echelons of the modern genre.
One of the leading disciples of Pandit Shri Bimalendu Mukherjee, doyen of the Imdadkhani Gharana, Anupama’s style is characterized by scintillating fast taans, mastery of the meditative alaap, and brilliant fluency of melody (raaga-bhava), while remaining true to tradition.
Gurdain started learning at the age of 3 from his father Harkirat Rayatt and grandfather Bhai Gurmit Singh Virdee. After training in Punjab & Benares styles, Gurdain became a senior disciple of Pdt Shankar Ghosh. He has performed worldwide in renowned festivals including Harballabh, Saptak, Darbar and WOMAD. He has accompanied maestros including Kala Ramnath, Purbayan Chatterjee, Prattyush Banerjee, Murad Ali and more. He teaches in North London and is featured in a number of CDs
Harkiret Bahra, a senior disciple of Ustad Harkirat Rayatt originally began his training in tabla from Giani Gurbachan Singh Hamdardh and Giani Gian Singh Surjit. Harkiret has also received some training from prominent tabla maestros and performers including Pandit Shankar Ghosh. Harkiret holds regular tabla classes in the South and South East (Kent). Harkiret continues to excel as a tabla player in his accompaniment with many artistes in the UK and internationally.
All places for the retreat needs to be secured at the time of booking with full payment or a minimum deposit of £100, the balance payable no later than 2 weeks prior to the retreat taking place.
Payments are to be made via bank transfer, cheque or cash. If for convenience it is necessary to pay via PayPal there will be a 5% surcharge to cover the PayPal charges. If you wish to pay over a number of payments, please let us know. This is perfectly acceptable as long as the balance is settled 2 weeks prior to the event. Please note you may forfeit the right to your place, if payments are not received on schedule. No monies shall be refunded if this occurs as it is your responsibility to make sure all payments are paid in full on time. Please contact us as soon as possible if there is a problem regarding your payments as we do not want to see anyone lose their place and will do our best to help you find a solution.
Chakardar agree to keep the website and information supplied, as up to date as possible. We reserve the right to alter event details, which may change due to circumstances beyond our control. We agree to release details of any changes as soon as practicable.
Any person found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be asked to leave the Retreat immediately. No refund shall be given under these circumstances. Behaviour that compromises the safety or the enjoyment of another person on the retreat will not be accepted. You are expected to act sensibly, without causing harm to any individual, their property or the venue. Chakardar shall not be deemed liable for any loss or damage to personal equipment or personal belongings of any person attending events. Chakardar will not take responsibility for any delays in your travel, so please allow sufficient time for travel. Chakardar accepts no liability for any accident or injury to yourself that may arise. However, Chakardar will do its utmost to protect that safety of all students.
These terms, conditions and any contract in which they are incorporated shall be subject to English law and the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England. Chakardar reserve the right to accept or refuse any booking at its discretion.
Please notify us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the Retreat, no less than 2 weeks prior to the event taking place.
Due to our commitment to paying for accommodation, food, equipment etc. prior to events taking place, it is not possible to refund any monies paid if you cancel less than 2 weeks prior to the event. Please be aware that all deposits are non refundable and will not be returned, if you cancel your booking. In the event that Chakardar has to cancel an event, we will refund any monies paid as soon as possible. No refunds will be made for partially completed courses/ workshops/ retreats/events.
All information supplied by you to Chakardar will remain protected under the data protection act and your information will not be disclosed to any third party. Please be advised your image(s) may be used for future promotions or TV or radio broadcast. We may send you emails advertising our events from time to time. You have the right to decline this offer if you wish to do so.
